After failing to execute a citizen's arrest on Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa on Saturday, a Tehama County man is setting his sights on the Republican lawmaker's friend and possible successor: Assembly candidate and former state senator Jim Nielsen.

In a wild scene in the pre-dawn hours Thursday, a 23-year-old woman who barreled a sport-utility vehicle at two Sacramento County sheriff's deputies was shot in both legs, authorities said.
